  7.      To commemorate the 22nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon
  8.      landing on July 20, 1969, The "Oprah Winfrey" show invited five
  9.      Apollo astronauts into an open-studio forum to talk about their
  10.      moon experiences, both during the mission and afterwards.

  12.      What they had to say about their missions, UFOs and extra-
  13.      terrestrials in general is worth repeating, particularly in
  14.      light of the  many "stories" attributed to the Apollo
  15.      astronauts.

  17.      The astronauts taking part were:

  19.      Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin: Apollo 11 mission.  Touchdown: Sea of
  20.      Tranquility, July 20, 1969.  The second man on the moon.

  38.      Ed, did going to the moon increase your feelings
  39.      about psychic phenomena?
  40.  
  41.              MITCHELL:
  42.       Mmmm, no, not really.

  45.              OPRAH:
  46.       No, you always believed it...
  47.  
  48.              MITCHELL:
  49.       Put it into different terms.  Those are old, old
  50.       words, by the way.  Let's use the word "intuition..."

  52.              OPRAH:
  53.       Okay.

  55.              MITCHELL
  56.       ...And how does information flow.  And yeah, I became very
  57.       interested in that at that point.

  59.              OPRAH:
  60.       Yeah.  I'm an intuitive-based person.  I do everything based
  61.       on intuition.  Do you too?

  63.              MITCHELL:
  64.       No. I'm a more linear thinker, I've had to develop
  65.       the intuition...
  66.  
  67.              OPRAH:
  68.       Not me, I don't go for the linear too much...
  69.  
  70.              MITCHELL:
  71.       (laughs) ...It's to learn how to get the balance, to get both
  72.       of them; but the point of the investigations of the things
  73.       I've been interested in; we know how our five senses work, but
  74.       you're an intuitive person, most everybody's intuitive to a
  75.       greater or lesser extent.  Where does that information come
  76.       from?  Where does intuitive information come from?

  78.              OPRAH:
  79.       Uh-huh.  Where do you think it comes from?
  80.  
  81.              MITCHELL:
  82.       Well, we're starting to understand some "models" for
  83.       it.  Jung called it the "collective unconscious", there's
  84.       information out here.  It's kind of like a field and we just
  85.       kind of tune into it and there it is.  At least that is what
  86.       the modern thinking is.

  90.              OPRAH:
  91.       When you were "out there", did you sense that there
  92.       were other "beings" -- not necessarily human -- also "out
  93.       there"?  James...?
  94.  
  95.              IRWIN:
  96.       I never sensed anything out at the moon or even beyond
  97.       the moon. I don't know (why) I get that question a lot,
  98.       because they think now  we're experts on extra-terrestrial
  99.       life, but I say I don't think there's extra-terrestrial life
  100.       anywhere.  I think the Earth is the only place where there's
  101.       life.

  103.              OPRAH:
  104.       You still think that?

  107.              IRWIN:
  108.       I still believe that.

  112.       You all think that?

  115.              MITCHELL:
  116.       No, I disagree completely.

  119.              OPRAH:
  120.       You don't think that, Ed?

  123.              MITCHELL:
  124.       No, I think  the universe is so magnificent and so huge, and,
  125.       uh, there is an intelligence base in the universe. And I can't
  126.       conceive of this being the only planet in the universe with
  127.       intelligent life...

  130.              OPRAH:
  131.       Intelligent life...

  134.              MITCHELL:
  135.       ...I think that there's intelligent life throughout the
  136.       universe, we just haven't discovered it yet.

  139.              OPRAH:
  140.       My intuition tells me that too, Ed.  Buzz, what do you say?

  143.              ALDRIN:
  144.       Ed may feel a little bit more certain about that.  I'm not
  145.       sure what's going to happen. It certainly looks as though the
  146.       odds are that there are a lot more opportunites out there than
  147.       we thought before, and I'd be very surprised -- and it may
  148.       even happen in our life time -- that we may find out some
  149.       evidence of intelligence and it will come because of a
  150.       furthering of the space program.

  153.              OPRAH:
  154.       All right.  Alan...

  157.              BEAN:
  158.       Well I think there's probably life out there. But someone
  159.       said, or computed, that the number of bodies in the universe
  160.       are about as dense as two chipmunks in all of North America.
  161.       And so for us to go and find --  let's say we're one of the
  162.       chipmunks and we're trying to find one of the others in all of
  163.       North America -- it's going to be hard to do.

  166.              ALDRIN:
  167.       Tough job...

  170.              BEAN:
  171.       So, I believe they're out there too, but we're not going to
  172.       find them any time soon, and we may never find them, because
  173.       of just the fact that they're so far, far apart.  If we look
  174.       at all the stars out there, there's probably planets around
  175.       them, but which one do we go to?  And if we go to that one,
  176.       even the nearest one takes four and a half years, come back in
  177.       nine...

  180.              ALDRIN:
  181.       At the speed of light...

  184.              BEAN:
  185.       That's right. Then go to the next one, takes another fifty
  186.       years, out and back...

  189.              OPRAH:
  190.       Yeah, I'm not THAT interested...

  194.       So it's going to be a tough job...

  214.       I didn't sense any life out in space, personally.

  218.       Never saw anybody..?

  221.              DUKE:
  222.       Never saw anybody, no UFOs, nothing like that. But I agree
  223.       with Jim.  I think that we are -- human life -- is unique in
  224.       the universe, and I think that's here on Earth. I believe in
  225.       spiritual life.  The scripture does talk about Heaven and Hell
  226.       and spiritual life, life after death, but it doesn't refer to
  227.       anything out in space.  So I agree with Jim.

  230.       [At this point, questions were taken from the audience. A
  231.       nervous young man asked the following question:- ]

  234.              MAN:
  235.       Um yes. Do you feel that the Government hides anything from
  236.       us?  For example, you see all these stories about people that
  237.       say they've been abducted and raped -- women that've been
  238.       raped -- and they say that it's a real factual story and that
  239.       tons of people have seen it...

  242.              OPRAH:
  243.       By ETs?  What paper was this is in?
  244.  
  245.       
  246.              MAN:
  247.       Did you see that show (where) they said the lights were coming
  248.       down and the police were out watching...?  Do you think that
  249.       the Government hides any of that?

  252.              DUKE:
  253.       No, I don't.  Not in NASA.  We were completely open.  We
  254.       couldn't even have a private conversation without it being
  255.       blasted out to the world.  I remember John (Young) and I were
  256.       talking and we had a problem with, uh, our microphone stuck
  257.       open and he was cussing and it went out to everybody.  No
  258.       bleeps!

  261.              OPRAH:
  262.       Ed, what do you say, you're shaking your head?

  265.              MITCHELL:
  266.       Well, I agree with what Charlie is saying about the NASA
  267.       program  -- there was nothing at all hidden in that -- but I
  268.       do believe that there's a lot more known about, uh,
  269.       extra-terrestrial investigation than is available to the
  270.       public right now; has been for a long time.

  274.       And why do you think it's kept from the public?
  275.

  277.              MITCHELL:
  278.       Oh well, that's a long, long story. It goes back to World 
  279.       War II when all of that happened, and highly classified stuff.

  283.       It makes for great book-selling...
